When your solar panels create more energy than your requirements during the day, your net meter will transfer this surplus energy back to the national grid. In a similar vein, during the night, when your solar panels are not producing electricity to power your applications, you are able to draw your exported electricity from the grid, and vice versa.

Thanks to the Net Metering program, which NEPRA introduced in 2015, people can easily export any excess electricity they generate to the national grid. This impressive initiative was launched in 2015. Applicants in Pakistan can apply for net metering through a complete process that has been outlined by NEPRA. If you already have a PV solar system on your roof, you will need to get in touch with an AEDB-registered company in your area. You might now be wondering why people can’t apply on their own. The reason for this is that NEPRA does not yet take applications directly from people. So, you will need to apply through a solar company in your area. The application process for your net metering service will start once you have made contact with a solar company that is registered with the AEDB. At this point, the company will ask you to provide them with important documents, such as your national ID card and your most recent account statement for power. Throughout the entirety of the application procedure, they will offer full guidance, and then they will send it on to the appropriate department.

If your application and the papers you sent are approved, officials from WAPDA and AEDB will visit your home to check out the solar system you installed. If the check goes according to their standard operating procedures, the energy department will issue a “No Objection Certificate” (NOC) in line with rule SRO 892 (1)/2015.

You will sign a contract with the local electric supply company in the Lahore region, such as LESCO, for a period of three years as soon as you have the NOC. The contract will pertain to the provision of electricity. This agreement will be considered legally binding, and it will dictate that you will send any excess solar energy that you generate to the electric grid of that particular firm. This agreement will be considered a legally enforceable arrangement.

In order for NEPRA to review this agreement and approve the license, LESCO (or any other nearby energy supply company) will send it there. After checking your information, NEPRA will give you a legal license. This is more than just a piece of paper; it’s proof that you will send your extra solar energy to the national grid for three years. Once every three years, you can get in touch with AEDB officials to renew your license.

Once you successfully receive the generation license, your net metering services will be turned on. You will have a net meter put in at your home, which means you can sell your extra power to the grid and save money.
